We've recently seen the release of the 25th anniversary enhanced edition, Quake 2 conveniently-enough turns 25 next year, and with Microsoft's acquisition of the company this time last year, it's possible the company's IP portfolio has had a refresh. And "sci-fi and fantasy environments" fit more neatly with Quake more than they do Doom, not least because the latest Doom game only released last year. With Machine Games presumably leading on Wolfenstein and Avalanche leading on Rage, that leaves id Software with just a couple of options for what that "iconic action FPS" might be - Doom or Quake.
